PROJECT 3 TERRITORIES, 1 RIVER THAT UNITES US. PATEIRA (PORTUGAL) 2021
“Cultural Journey in Pateira: Sculptures of Boats and Fishermen that Will Resonate Forever” In the beautiful enclave of Pateira, a significant cultural project came to life under the title “Three Territories, Three Shores: Fermentelos, Espinhel and Óis da Ribeira”. In this enriching context, we were given the opportunity to shape three identical sculptures, each representing a traditional Portuguese boat alongside an intrepid fisherman. These unique pieces, collectively called “Bateira con Pescador”, took shape in 20 mm iron sheets, where the silhouette of the fisherman was masterfully cut out, capturing his essence and history in the metal. The essence of fishing and maritime tradition were rooted in these sculptures that were distributed in three different regions: Sever do Vouga, Albergaria-a-Velha and Águeda. These three places enthusiastically welcomed the presence of the works, which became a tangible reminder of the importance of fishing in local history and its link with water. Additionally, in two nearby towns, we created a similar boat design, but with unique fishermen. Each sculpture had a story of its own: one with a fisherman whose head was made of cast aluminum and his body made of iron, and another with a polished steel head and a heart-shaped space. These elements added depth to the representations and highlighted the diversity of lives that are intertwined with the sea. An especially gratifying aspect is that these works have remained in situ, becoming permanent pieces that can be admired indefinitely. As silent witnesses to local history and culture, these sculptures will evoke emotions and connections over time, paying homage to the region’s rich maritime heritage.
